Problem
Creating a cluster was only the beginning. People still needed to connect their data, discover the products available to them, and understand whether the resources they had configured were healthy.
I wanted the dashboard to help people decide what to do next, whether that meant setting up a feature or investigating a problem. A high-level summary needed to stay scannable without hiding the detail someone would need to act.
Key decisions
- Bring health and the next action together. I designed to summarize warnings and errors across a cluster, then lead people to the affected product and its local detail.
- Introduce features where people could use them. For products that were not configured, I surfaced within the dashboard, with an exit to documentation for the deeper use cases and tradeoffs.
- Reveal detail without losing the overview. I used to let people investigate a resource, then return to the broader system view. My earlier work on Coinbase mobile informed the emphasis on predictable motion, rather than importing its touch gestures into this dashboard.
